There’s a Host in the House. My Battle with Web Hosting

By admin | June 11, 2008

The technical side of this has driven me crackers over the last few weeks and months. I have to say though that there is a great deal of personal satisfaction once the penny finally drops and you get to the next stage, perhaps having struggled for hours to get one piece of the jigsaw.

I want to tell you about my experiences and one of the first mistakes I made which was to end up with 3 web hosting accounts. For those of you who don’t know what these are well I can only describe them as the engine that contains your domain t(hat is your web name or site) and which in the background links everything together.

How did I end up with 3 hosting companies you might ask, well, lets just say that I did my own research originally and found what I think is one of the best and the cheapest but I also enrolled on a couple of courses (which will remain nameless at this stage) and ended up buying into the whole experience of following what they were saying. The fact is I didn’t realise that these were their own hosting companies they were recommending, which didn’t help.

I will be trying to get them all into the one company when I have the time but I suspect that the technical side will be something of a pain so I keep putting it off.

Why am I telling you this, well, apart from the expense, it gets to be something of a technological nightmare when you are adding on domain names. I am going to make that the subject for another day, but trust me., think before you go down the route of having more than one hosting company. It’s a very easy trap to fall into. Well it was for me!

I think it pays to take a step back and examine everything before you commit. If a programme talks about getting a hosting account and a domain name then there is no point in duplicating this. If you already have a domain name that is suitable and a hosting account don’t reinvent the wheel .Most hosting accounts allow you to have more than one domain name. Use it. The one I prefer is Hostgator because it is cheap, less than a fiver (or 10 dollars to our American friends), it allows multiple domains and the support has been excellent so far.

So how do we get those domains and hosting accounts set up?.

Tell you later!

Jane
