6 Easy Steps to Mindmapping and Brainstorming Techniques
By admin | July 19, 2008
If you are stuck for ideas for finding a niche or the content for an article why dont you consider a mindmap?
A mindmap is a diagram used to represent ideas, concepts, ideas or other tasks, linked to and arranged around a central keyword or idea.
It is basically a diagram of images connecting portions of information. Because it is in a radial form ie stemming from a central word and non linear it encourages you to brainstorm.
Whilst they have been around for centuries as an aid to brainstorming and memory, its really only in the early 60s that mindmaps started to take off as an aid to learning and tactical understanding.
You could think of them as a spidergram. Lots of words and ideas branching off in all directions can take on the appearance of a spiders web.
So what are the steps to starting a mindmap. Well its quite simple
- Start in the middle of the page. Not only is it easier to branch off when you start in the middle, your mind focuses on the centre of the page
- Dont think too hard. Put down all the ideas and thoughts that come into your head and think fast, dont deliberate whether there is a connection between the words or ideas, there is in your subconcious mind!
- Dont just use words, you can use images, colours or any sort of shorthand that you would recognise
- Dont use your judgment, unrelated ideas and images could make sense later on.
- Keep on going, if you feel like you are running out of ideas, draw a line, stand up and get a bit of movement then attack it again.
- Add connections and sub branches. Relationships between words might not be obvious but you are not putting any organisation into it at this stage, just getting all your ideas, thoughts and words on paper.
So if you are stuck for ideas and need to brainstorm, try a mindmap.
