What is a blog? How does it get Traffic?

These are two questions that seem to be asked a lot, I know I certainly wasnt sure and I am not entirely convinced about the answer to either. Some blogs get more than a million visitors a month, not this one, no you are a member of a select yet growing audience! How on earth is it done?Well I don’t think you would expect 1 person to be writing sufficient content nor doing all the other stuff that goes with blogging if they were getting that sort of traffic, it wouldnt be physically possible,they have teams, outsourcing, guests, the whole lot.
There is no point in trying to compete at that level when you are starting out. In fact you may never want to compete, it sounds like hard work!!
A blog can be a very simple medium for getting a message out there. They are relatively easy to set up and maintain and can evolve as your experience evolves. This one is certainly doing that. If you are at all interested in getting a presence of any sort on the net, then a blog has got to be the way forward. It doesnt need to be all singing all dancing, thought some certainly are. My technical skills are not that great (though improving) and I quite like a simple looking site as it suits my simple looking nature!
Your blog can be anything you want it to be. If you want it to create a business for you, it can but its not easy work. On the other hand if you want to have just an online diary, a blog can be that as well or instead.
I am working on the traffic element at the moment and will report back periodically on that, but if you start from the premise its about content, you are partially right. I try and post here once a day although this week has been a bit slow on that point for a variety of reasons. There is no doubt that constantly posting and writing articles increases traffic but what other things come into play?
If you are looking at single author blogs like what this one is, they may never receive exceptional search traffic because most people are searching for an answer to a problem and many blogs are asking questions rather than trying to answer them. I suppose you could say that the title of this post falls into that catagory but I am and do try and pose questions and answer them in the post as much as I can.
It helps if you have a passion for your topic. I can safely admit, hand on heart here that I didnt even know what internet marketing was 9 months ago but I love reading about it now, learning about it and helping others to avoid some of my more costly mistakes if I can. Its a bit of a learning curve but there would be no point my writing about football for example because I dont get it.
There are so many ways of getting traffic, it could make your head spin and it will, content posting, articles, social media, clever keywords, search engine optimisation(seo),linking, digg, StumbleUpon. Tons of ways. These are all things I will be posting about over the next few days and weeks so watch this space. I am learning the ropes and will impart the pearls of wisdom I pick up (and pay for!).
