Research to make money online

I have written in the last few posts about the importance of keyword research and given some pointers to some tools that are free and some that arent.You can use all free tools if you like but the trade off is that it takes more time.
So what other research should you be considering when you are deciding on a particular niche or even when you are trying to find a niche?
The internet marketing field is huge. There are vast numbers of products and “gurus” out there. I have looked in earlier posts at forums. Apart from anything else these are a good source of finding out what is going on in internet marketing circles. They are useful for investigating products that you might be thinking of purchasing and for finding out where there might be gaps in the market for your own product if you were thinking at some stage of producing your own, not that I am suggesting that you launch into this if you are a newbie. There is nothing to stop yo thinking along those lines though and forums can be a good place to start your investigations.
A word of warning on forums though. You can spend a lot of time in them and find that you have lost sight of why you went in there in the first place. I sometimes feel that I have been in a chat room for hours. Perhaps the best thing to do is look at the clock as you enter and stay there only for a predetermined time,or you could waste time.
Other research you could think of, what about looking at blogs? There are a huge number out there and all of the gurus will have one. Have a look at blogcatalog.This is a directory of blogs based on category.
Technorati is another site that specialises in blogs and its going to be easier to find blogs through that than say Google although you would also want to think of looking at google as well,by typing in keywords and doing a bit of search that way as well.
So find some blogs and strart keeping an eye on them. See whats hot and whats not so hot. Kind of immerse yourself in your market for a few days and get a feel for whats around. Its free and you will find it invaluable material as you start thinking of niches and what you might like to investigate in more depth.
